LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Mississippi needs all the federal assistance it can get

To The Editor:

I am writing this editorial as a person who was born and raised in Holly Springs. Over the past two years a lot of things has taken place in this country. Mississippi has been one of the states that has allowed some of our elected officials to attach themselves to a person and not to their state or what’s in the best interest of the state

Our governor has aligned himself with a person that lost a presidential election and who himself is aligned with white nationalists. The thing that Reeves is doing to the state is hurting the people of Mississippi. He is talking about stopping the extra $300 of federal assistance to unemployment which will cause a lot of hurt to the people of Mississippi. As a black male, I understand the reason behind the idea and that is to get mostly black folks back to work for restaurants that don’t pay enough to support their family. But that move will not only hurt the black community, it will hurt the white community as well.

It’s time that Mississippians get rid of people like Reeves, the attorney general and anyone else that holds up people before their state and people. Those people are only thinking of themselves and their political ambitions or a higher office in their future.

We have endured a pandemic which our governor opened up the state too soon following the lies of Trump, lifted the mandate for masks instead of following the advice of the CDC, and causing people to either get sick or die. Our state deserves better than the attorney general and governor of Mississippi.

These two individuals want this state to stay in the past with the KKK ways and not move forward. But we can and will do better than what we have now. The State of Mississippi needs all the federal assistance that it can get whether it’s for the school system, unemployment, housing, economic growth or whatever it takes to propel Mississippi into a better and prosperous state. We need Reeves to stand up for Mississippi or stand down. If not it’s time to elect officials who can be a leader and not a follower. It’s time Mississippians put the governor on notice; we are tired of the political games, tired of being the butt of jokes, tired of being uneducated, unemployed, undeveloped, unserved. But mostly, tired of being used as political pawns. Mr. Reeves, Mississippi is tired.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Riddle
