Letter to the Editor

A tribute to Alfred `Skip' Robinson

Dear Editor,

On the occasion of Black History

Month, 2021, the officers and members of the Marshall County Democratic Party wish to take a moment to honor and recognize the citizens of Marshall County that have contributed greatly to the advancement of voter participation and voting rights and courageously stood up to voter suppression tactics over the years in Marshall County and throughout the State of Mississippi.

Most particularly, on this year, we honor and pay tribute to Alfred "Skip" Robinson and recognize his efforts through his leadership of the United League of North Mississippi in the 1970's and 1980's. Through his leadership, black communities of Northern Mississippi effectively tempered police beatings, organized citywide boycotts, prevented black land and property loss, urged armed defense among its members, and elected local blacks into political office. His influence was not only felt not only in Holly Springs and Marshall County but in surrounding communities of Ripley, Tupelo, Okolona and across Mississippi.

On this occasion, during this month, as we celebrate Black History and the contributions of African-Americans to our American culture, we invite everyone to join us in remembering and paying tribute to the legacy of Alfred "Skip" Robinson and his efforts in social justice, voter engagement and paving the way for the African-Americans who have served or now serve as elected officials not only in Marshall County but throughout and to the State of Mississippi.

At our most recent meeting, the Democratic Executive Committee adopted a resolution recognizing Mr. Robinson and his contributions to Marshall County and the State of Mississippi which is and shall be recorded in the minutes and is to be presented to Mr. Robinson's family.

Sincerely, Delia J. Reid Chair
