LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Police officers deserve raise

Dear Editor:

I went to a board of aldermen meeting a few months ago and learned, to my astonishment (and perhaps others’), that our law enforcement was only getting paid $15 per hour. I couldn’t believe my ears.

There are kids flipping burgers in California that make that much. We obviously aren’t in California, thankfully, but surely, those who are devoted to protecting life, limb and property in this fair city deserve a bit more.

I had hoped the new budget might fix this issue, but alas, no. Instead of buying new vehicles when old ones will do, instead of painting faux bricks on the pavement that will erode away, instead of paying $20,000 for awning painting (which could have been done more cheaply by letting the building owners paint and then issuing tax credits, therefore lengthening out the supply of money and earning interest), why don’t we, as a community, try to get these poor guys and gals a small raise?

Would the gentle readers of your paper go and risk their own necks for $15? I might have to think long and hard on it. I will leave it to them to make that same decision.

Surely, upon this upcoming yuletide season, we can find some generosity of heart for these devoted people.

Sincerely,
Bruce Reed
