Exciting to watch the playoffs

The basketball postseason began last week with area district games played. I have never taken sports photos at games until this past year. It has been a learning experience, but I have enjoyed watching the local teams compete and meeting many people that enjoy reading The South Reporter at the games.

Last week postseason began. Holly High School Hawks went up against Byhalia High School Indians Thursday, February 9. Both teams played well, but Byhalia won the game with a final score of 69-60.

Byhalia played North Panola Friday, February 10, for the final district game. You could feel the excitement in the air with the gym packed with supporters from both teams there to cheer them on.

Byhalia Indians won the game with a final score of 6459. They are the 3A District Champs.

Potts Camp High School Cards played Charleston High School in Friday night 2A action and won the game with a final score of 76-65.

H.W. Byers High School and Blue Mountain met on the court for the final playoff game. Byers blew passed Blue Mountain, almost doubling the score and winning with a final score of 60-37.

The games continue this week with the North playoffs, and I hope everyone chooses their team and comes out to support them.

Being from a family with three brothers and three sisters, I have been to many high school games. I went to my alma mater, Brooks High School, games for 13+ years. My brothers played football and basketball and were on the track team. My sisters were cheerleaders, and we all were in the band, and I played basketball too.

As all of you Moms and Dads know, you practically live at the school when your kids play sports or are in the band. It was no different for my family.

My youngest sister, Teresa, was born the night after the first football ballgame of the season in 1976. I remember my mother was so uncomfortable sitting on the bleachers that night. I went to the car with her and sat on the car hood until the game ended. The following morning I remember my dad had not shaved and was carrying all of us to school. When school was out, my dad picked us up after school and told us we had a new little sister.

School sports are always good to help students to be more responsible, take on challenges, and learn to play as a team.

I didn't attend many high school games until my daughter, Emily, played basketball and was a cheerleader.

The 2023 Mississippi High School Activities Association and the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools basketball championship games began this week on Monday night. The bracket games for the rest of this week are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18, and through next week. Games start on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and last through Mar. 3.

Watching the games again is exciting but different because I am behind a camera as the games are played. I have always loved the game and seeing the students excel in the sports they love.
