Too many robocalls

I’ve touched on this subject before, but it’s one that simmers right on top of my brain. After listening to the news this morning, it’s bubbling over.

According to “somebody” on the national news this morning it’s not going to be much longer before more than 50 percent of the phone calls we receive will be robocalls.

I’ve got news for them — I already get around 80 percent robocalls on my landline. I keep a landline because cell service is not reliable down in my part of the woods. And when it rains our power goes out. Son Kris has to call the utility department somehow.

Now, I’m getting robocalls on my cell phone. And I’m mad. We even get them here at the newspaper office. I answered the phone Monday morning and was shouted at — Don’t Hang Up!!! Yep. I hung right up.

Everything I Google says register your numbers on the National Do Not Call List. I did that years ago. Hasn’t slowed a single phone call down.

One recommendation says file a complaint with the FCC. If enough people complain, the FCC will find and fine them.

And there is also a registry for political robocalling.

I hope all the local politicians will heed this warning — if you robocall me I will not vote for you.

You can personally call me and have a conversation and maybe influence me your way. But a robocall is an automatic no vote. I used to love Sela Ward — one of my favorite actresses. Until her husband ran for some office here and she began robocalling me.

I can’t watch her on TV anymore and I voted directly against her husband.

One of my “favorite” calls is from a 252 number and the enthusiastic girl tells me that since I’ve already vacationed one time with them, they’re offering me a great deal to come back.

One major problem with robocalls is they can’t hear when you scream at them.

Seriously though, I pay for my landline and can’t use it. I pay a fortune for my cell phone and it’s getting worse all the time.

I guess it’s time for me to call the public service commissioner for North Mississippi, Brandon Presley, and file some more complaints with the FCC.

I’m really angry about all the robocalls. I think perhaps I get more than most people. Sometimes, in the space of an evening, I’ll get at least 10 calls.

These calls are invading my life and my home and my privacy.

Why can’t they be stopped?
