Leading greatgrandmothers to glory

It’s a lot different being a grandparent than it is a parent. There’s even a big difference between being a grandparent and a great-grandparent.

I have family and good friends who’ve just become great-grandmothers. They all act like I do – nuts!

Sunday, my oldest granddaughter came down and brought my great-grandson, Shepard, 2 and a half going on 40, and Ruby June, 11 months and acting her age.

And I have to admit, I don’t act my age. For instance, I keep a box of Red Hots beside my chair (yes, I’m a Red Hot addict). Shepard has developed a taste for my “hots” and I watched him as he got a huge Tupperware bowl off my table and poured my entire box of hots into this enormous bowl. Then, he poured them into a square popcorn container that I keep as many of his trucks in as I can and then he’d pour them back into the big bowl. And when he offered me one I’d let him use his dirty little hands out of various dirty containers and pop it in my mouth.

One of my kids, when they were children, would never have either been allowed to pour them out or me eat them from their nasty little hands.

I would have let my granddaughters play with them, but I still wouldn’t have eaten them.

Mom Mere took Shepard outside with her and left me alone with RJ. Shepard is an incredibly picky eater, always has been, but RJ will eat anything that doesn’t get her first. She shouldn’t be the little tiny baby that she is.

We were a little hungry, or at least I thought we were, so, as her brain-deprived greatgrandmother, I fed her chocolate pudding.

I have a cousin who has recently been gifted with her first great-grandchild. She’s always been the same kind of grandmother I am – soft in the brain where her three grandsons are concerned.

She’s going to be another great-grandmother like me also. I’m so proud to be leading great-grandmothers on to glory.
