Thank you to all the helpers

Well, Mother Nature sure showed her true colors last week blasting us with not only one but two major winter storms. Following along with a lot of people from our state on social media, it appeared Mississippi was closed from Jackson north. It was interesting to see posts from people who live in the North condemning and laughing all the while, asking why we could not just get our roads cleared and things back to normal. Normal here is most definitely not subzero temperatures and not only snow, but layers of ice prior.

For those of us “townies” who have been here forever, we well remember the ice storm of 1994. Talk about shut down...I know we did not have power for 10 days and some even longer than that. We were guests in the home of friends, as were a lot of others who were out of power. Even though it was what we thought was a bad time, we made the most of it and thoroughly enjoyed everyone's company.

A big thank you to Holly Springs Utility Department for fixing whatever issues cropped up during the week long freeze from gas leaks to power flickers. Just last night (Monday), there was a gas main break on Salem Avenue. The crew worked until the wee hours of the morning to fix that. If not for their attentiveness, the entire block could have been blown to smithereens.

In tough times like what we experienced last week, it is nice to see those who ventured out to help our community members. Food taken to those who could not leave their homes and even simple phone calls to check on loved ones.

I think for just that small period of time, the coronavirus took a backseat, as I did not hear mention one of it. So as unusual was the weather, it was a welcomed break in that regard.

Back to hoping Spring shows up quickly and bats start cracking on baseball fields across the area!
