Christmas is a great time to give back to the community
It is only days before Christmas, and excitement fills the air. Students, parents, and employees alike are looking forward to being out of school and off work to celebrate the holidays. Christmas is the season of giving, and the Marshall County community has undoubtedly been busy preparing for the holiday and sharing its meaning.
The Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Nu Mu Mu Chapter handed out free coats and school supplies to the public at the Eddie L Smith Multi-Purpose building on Saturday morning, Dec. 10.
Eric Ross, a fraternity member, helped organize the fundraiser and said it is a passion to give back to the community.
“It’s a good feeling to give back,” he said.
Many at the event said it was a fantastic way to give back to the community. The temps have dropped in the low twenties and at night in the single digits. It is good that many of the children have nice warm coats.

Many churches in Marshall County have given back to the community by holding Christmas musicals performed by the church choirs. Christmas musicals are one of my favorite activities to watch during Christmas time. Faye Cook, a co-worker, invited me to attend Slayden Baptist Church Christmas cantata, The First Noel. It was magnificent. Fellowship followed in the adjoining building, where I met senior pastor Joel Strahan. The ladies who prepared the food and tables made it so lovely and festive, plus the food was perfectly delicious. It was a wonderful celebration to bring everyone together in the Christmas spirit.
Willette Jeffries contacted me Friday, Dec. 16, to come and cover the North Mississippi Community Research Training and Development (NMCRTD), Annual Christmas Cheers for families Saturday, Dec. 17, at the National Guard Armory. Seeing the community come together and give out toys, clothing, food, and bikes to ninety families was an awesome experience. I met so many beautiful people in our community.
Last Sunday, the Holly Springs High School Band presented its winter musical. I am a band enthusiast, having been a member of my high school band. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to meet some of the Holly Springs High School Band members a few weeks ago, and they were really looking forward to performing their upcoming musical for the community.
Christmas is a time to share and give. It touched my heart how many people in our area help those with needs. I have only mentioned a few groups that have given to the community this Christmas, but I'm sure there are many more. Sometimes we need help from family or friends. You may not find a heartfelt giving spirit in every community, but I have found it here in Marshall County. Living in a community with a giving heart that desires to share with others is magical.
My wish is for the community to take a moment to enjoy family and friends during this hustle and bustle of Christmas. My challenge for everyone this Christmas is to be thankful for all the kindness in our community: the people, businesses, teachers, and elected officials. May our hearts be made whole, and may we spread the love and kindness of giving throughout the year.
