Celebrating the fourth of July

One of the greatest celebrations we have in this country is our independence. It is our freedom. It is our country. On July 4, 1776, our country declared Independence. The Continental Congress signed and declared our 13 colonies to be separated from Great Britain. It is one of the most important holidays for our country to remember…our independence.

There are many ways to remember our independence and most of us get together with family and friends on the fourth. It’s always fun for family and friends to get together. It may be in the backyard, around a pool, or on the river. It takes planning when you have a large crowd and when my family gets together there are over 50 present. To some that is a small crowd but either way it takes a lot of food to feed that many.

My dad always took the lead in making plans for the fourth of July. My mom would make sure we had enough for everyone to eat and the house was in order for family and guests. We grew up on Wilson Lake so we all liked to be out on a sailboat, ski boat, or paddling in the two canoes. Some of us chose to stay at the pool or layout in the sun on the pier. But we always set off fireworks. I can remember my dad holding the roman candles up and watching the bright red and blue colors bursting out of the top. After we finished with our fireworks we watched the pyrotechnic fireworks being set off down the river at Turtle Point Golf and Yacht Club. They were always so bright and beautiful.

It was a full day of fun but the fireworks brought us back to why we were celebrating.

Fireworks are great, especially today. Cities and parks usually have a great pyrotechnic fireworks show. Have you ever wondered or thought why we shoot fireworks off on the fourth of july or though who came up with the idea. It started in Philadelphia, in 1777, when a shipped fired a 13-gun salute in honor of our 13 colonies and the Sons of Liberty set them off fireworks over the Boston Common.

The City of Holly Springs approved the fireworks show and entertainment to be held Saturday, July 1 on the courthouse square. Showtime is 7 p.m. and the fireworks are set to go off at 9 p.m. It will be a fun time for everyone.

Be safe and have a happy fourth of July.

Last week was a hot one but it did not stop people from coming out to the first annual Backyard BBQ Cookoff in Byhalia. When I arrived I just followed the delicious aroma of ribs and chicken being smoked on the grill. There were many vendors and twenty-two pit masters competing.

The mayor of Byhalia, Debby Weathers and alderman William Rose, and many others were judging the mouth-watering ribs. It was such a great turnout that the mayor hopes that they have one next year.
