A bit of magic surrounds Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, along with all the excitement. As parents plan decorations, parties, and candy purchases, children put together their creation of the best Halloween costume to show off on the big night. Like most holidays, a little bit of magic surrounds Halloween.

Years ago, when my daughter was just a child, she would get so excited about Halloween. The first thing that we would do is buy the perfect pumpkin to sit on the front porch. We have carved small and large pumpkins. The part I hated most was cleaning out the pumpkin. It felt so yucky on the inside. One year, after Halloween, her dad threw the pumpkin into the compost area in our backyard. The following year we had a pumpkin vine with several pumpkins on it which saved a few neighbors and us a couple of bucks that year.

My daughter has always been a planner, so she would have a list of costume ideas that she would narrow down to one just in time for Halloween. Some safety tips for costumes are to make sure they are bright and reflective. Some parents add reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

We lived in the perfect neighborhood for Halloween in my daughter’s younger years. Everyone in the neighborhood decorated their yard in unique ways; one house was particularly the most terrifying. You could hear scary sounds and screams as you walked to the house. It had a casket sitting in the carport and lots of spiders and ghost decorations. Tombstones were throughout the yard, surrounded by images of witches stirring black kettle cauldrons on a burning fire. Every child in the neighborhood wanted to walk up to the house to get candy because they gave out the best.

Many churches, police stations, and fire stations have chosen to have fall festivals, trick-or-treat drive-thrus, or costume contests this Halloween in Holly Springs.
