Vera Kathryn “Kathy” Hurdle Crawford
Vera Kathryn “Kathy” Hurdle Crawford, 82, passed away September 25, 2026, at her beloved home in Slayden, Mississippi.
During the final three weeks of her life, Kathy was surrounded by her sisters, brothers, husband, family, and friends. They shared reunions, luncheons, cleaned her house, loved on her, and traveled together down memory lane. It was a beautiful time, and God was so good to Kathy and her family during those final weeks.
Born November 1, 1943, to Eula Mae “Tump” Valentine Hurdle and Leslie Byron “Tootsie” Hurdle Sr., Kathy was a lifelong Slayden resident and faithful member of Slayden Baptist Church. She lived with deep faith, grace, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Kathy married the love of her life, Boyce Daryl Crawford, on October 19, 1962. Together they raised four children: Candace Layne, Eric Shane, Daryl Clayton, and Boyce Hunter.
Family was at the heart of Kathy’s life. Deeply patriotic, The Fourth of July was her favorite day of the year. Her annual picnic became a beloved tradition, sometimes bringing together as many as 200 people.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Boyce; daughter, Laynie Williams and husband Joe; sons, Shane Crawford and wife Celeste; Clay Crawford and wife Denise; and Hunter Crawford and wife Ali.
She is also survived by sisters Jennifer Speir and husband Gerry, Dinah Kay Lundine and husband Joe, Eydie Branyan and husband Bob, and Beverly Hurdle and Kenny Dickerson; brothers Paul Hurdle and wife Nellie and Alan Hurdle and wife Judy; sister-in-law Sue Hurdle; and aunt Katherine Valentine Boling.
Her beloved grandchildren are Allen Wootten and wife Emily, Sophie Williams, Buddy Gray and wife Michelle, Peyton Crawford, Chandler Crawford, Christian Crawford and wife Allie, Lexi McAlexander and husband Ryan, Paige Brewer, Harris Gholson III, Myles Crawford, and Grayson Crawford. Her great-grandchildren are Rory Wootten, Nora Gray, Jo Gray, Crawford Petree, Kennedy Brewer, Collins Crawford, and Westyn McAlexander.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leslie Byron Hurdle Jr.
A reception celebrating Kathy’s life will be held Sunday, November 1, from 2-4 p.m. At Slayden Baptist Church Activity Center. In Kathy’s characteristically selfless way, she donated her body to science; there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Slayden Cemetery or Marshall Academy.
The family extends special thanks to Dinah Kay Lundine for her selfless care, time, and companionship.
