Patricia “Pat” Hankins Shields

Patricia “Pat” Hankins Shields, 84, of Oxford, formerly of Potts Camp, died March 31, 2017, at Oxford Health and Rehab. The widow of Jimmy M. Shields, she graduated from Potts Camp High School as valedictorian. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a former member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. She was retired from the U.S. government after 39 years. She served the last 27 years with the Army ROTC at her alma mater, the University of Mississippi. She received many awards and honors during her career. She was a very active volunteer, a member of the Domestic Violence Board of Directiors, where she served as the financial officer and a counselor. She finalized the funding for a grant and opened a shelter for abused women and children.

Services were April 4 at 3 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Lisa Gale Taylor of Oxford; a son, Dave Cook (Hettie) of Buckhead, Ga.; two sisters, Sue Gilliam of Memphis, Tenn., Cindy Walker of Alabama; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Cook; a son, Don P. Cook; sisters, Ann Russell, Dolly Shaw; and brothers James Hankins and Evan Hankins.
