Margaret Smith Holland

September 24, 1928 – May 30, 2018

Margaret Smith Holland was born in Memphis, TN, and graduated from the Hutchinson High School. Her father Joe Frazer Smith, a regionally famous architect (March 25, 1897 – April 13, 1957) married Ada McDonnell in 1922. Margaret lived in Memphis until she met the love of her life Lanier Holland and moved to Holly Springs in 1972. Sadly her marriage lasted only 8 years when Lanier died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. She survived her only sister Susan Smith Hughes and her husband Lanier Franklin Holland. She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Susan Hughes Hoehn, Frazer Hughes Hendrick and Burr Durrell Hughes.

Margaret graduated from the University of Tennessee and received her Master of Education from University of Minnesota in Recreational Therapy. Margaret was highly skilled in crafts and her career led her to work with mentally ill patients at hospitals as a recreational therapist and later to open her own craft shop, Holly Hobbies, in Holly Springs in 1977. Margaret was very supportive of the community and interested in many areas of life in Holly Springs. She was a long time member and president of the Town and Country Garden Club. She supported the Historical Society, the Friends of the Library and was a member of the Thursday Club. Her interests in cooking led her to own and operate the Country Smoke House Restaurant in Holly Springs. Margaret desired to help others, so she tutored and served on the board of the Literary Alliance. Her church was very important to her where she was a faithful and active member at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, as well as being a member of the Dominican Lay Order for education.

Margaret was a quiet woman of integrity. Those who knew Margaret remember her charming smile and would see her walking her favorites pets, Rocky and Mollie. She was very proud of Holly Springs and especially enjoyed the Pilgrimage celebrations. Margaret had an endearing personality which made her many friends. Even as her health declined she remained cheerful and positive. She died peacefully in her sleep at Christopher’s Home in Holly Springs.

Services will be held Thursday, June 14, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church: viewing at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.

The family request that any memorials or remembrances be sent to St Joseph’s Catholic Church in lieu of flowers.
