Juanita Lucile Brown Furner

July 15, 1932 -  June 5, 2018

Juanita “Nita” was born on July 15, 1932, to the late Benjamin B. Brown and  Eva Connelly Brown in Holly Springs. She graduated from Holly High as valedictorian and best dressed with the class of 1950 and then attended the University of Mississippi where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.

She married Edward Greer Furner in 1952. Nita and Ed lived in Memphis, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., Montgomery, Ala., New Canaan, Conn., Hilton Head Island, S.C. (1989-2013) and Venice, Fla. (2013-18).

Nita served as president of The Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island (1992-93). She was active in Bible studies, women’s groups and decorating committees at her churches. She loved to read, travel, garden, walk on the beach, and entertain. Spending time with family was her favorite activity.

Nita is survived by her husband, Edward Furner, her children; Eva Furner of Placida, Fla., Susan (Chris) Allen of Parker, Colo., and Christopher (JoAnn) Furner of Austin, Texas. Other family members include: Pam Neer of Placida, her grandchildren; Sara Gibbens of Aurora, Colo., and Emily Hudish of Golden, Colo., great-grandchildren; Logan Gibbens and Kathleen Gibbens  and one great-great-granddaughter, Anastasia.

She was preceded in death by her sister: Eva House, her brother: Eugene Brown, and her grandson; Dennis Furner.

Nita passed away on June 5, 2018, in Venice, Fla. She will be interred at Providence Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island.
