James Hoyt Johnson

God in His infinite wisdom took His servant James Hoyt Johnson on February 15 at the age of 81. Hoyt was a lifelong resident of Marshall County and was known by almost everyone. He was born in Waterford, the first son of James Henry (Jack) Johnson and Mary Lee Thomas Johnson

While a youngster in Waterford, Hoyt was already a colorful character. He wrote songs which made friends and sometimes enemies. When he was 7 years old, Hoyt bought a goat with $2.50 that was given to him by some sympathetic railroad workers. With joy and pride, Hoyt rode in the wagon pulled by Billy to greet his playmates. He was the playground hero! Billy was also a typical goat and before long, he just disappeared. This was a crushing blow to the young hero one he never forgot!

As an adult in Holly Springs, Hoyt had many friends and felt deeply about social issues. He often ran for public office not expecting to win but enjoying being part of the process. He felt that knowledgeable members of society have an obligation to be leaders. Hoyt was a friend to the underdog, often caring for them at the end of their life. He provided financially for causes he cared about, often anonymously.

Hoyt was a talented tradesman in plumbing and electricity. His loyal customers usually became his loyal friends. He had an active mind, never at a loss for words. Hoyt will be greatly missed. As a member of Calvary Baptist Church, he had traveled on several missionary -trips.

In his later years, Hoyt became a devoted child of God and spent a lot of his time reading the Bible. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Annell Johnson Schmitt of Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by his brothers Fred Johnson of Oxford, Lake Johnson of Waterford, Trent Johnson of Como; a sister, Sue Johnson Hensley of Mooresville, Ala., 12 devoted nieces and nephews, and a large extended family.

A service will be held on February 28 at the Holly Springs Funeral Home with visitation at 12 noon, the funeral at 2 p.m., followed by burial in Hill Crest Cemetery. At Hoyt's request, pallbearers will be David Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Casey Johnson, Jason Schmitt, Warren Schmitt, and Richard Noverese. Honorary pall bearers will be Jerry Johnson and Jimmy Shelton.
