Holly High sweeps Cougars

Holly Springs’ road trip to North Panola Friday night was a successful one, resulting in a pair of district wins.

The Lady Hawks earned their first Region 2-3A victory of the season, 45-32 over the Lady Cougars.

“We dropped two district games the week before, so this was an important game for us,” coach Andre Jones said.

“We are focusing on improving and getting better. Our approach is to take it one game at a time.”

The Lady Hawks stormed out of the starting gate, going up 16-3 after the opening quarter of action. They led 25-7 at halftime and 34-19 after three quarters.

Dajah Turner had a strong showing at North Panola. The point guard had 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Julia Vaughn pulled down a team-best nine rebounds, and she scored eight points.

Arriyunna Washington was the leader in steals with six, and she added seven points.

The Lady Hawks outrebounded the Lady Cougars 39 to 33.

The Holly Springs boys stayed unbeaten in district play with a 64-52 win at North Panola Friday.

The Hawks, too, took control of the game early, outscoring the Cougars 20-2 in the opening quarter.

“We got off to a great start,” coach Kenzaki Jones said. “They (North Panola) fought hard all night but we were able to hold them off and maintain the lead throughout the game.

“It’s always good to get a division win on the road, especially against a talented North Panola team.”

Coach Jones got solid contributions from several players.

Ded’drick Faulkner had 12 points and seven rebounds, Derek Fountain 10 points and 18 rebounds, Dylan King 10 points and 11 rebounds, Tyhem Reaves 10 points and seven rebounds, and Cadarius Autry 10 points and six rebounds.

The Hawks dominated the boards, outrebounding the home team 55 to 30.

The Lady Hawks (6-5) and the Hawks (8-3) visited Potts Camp on Tuesday night of this week. They will host Byhalia Friday, and then play in several holiday tournaments the next couple of weeks.
