Henry Lee “Shane” Mabon

Henry Lee “Shane” Mabon, 82, of Lamar, died Dec. 16, 2016. He was one of the first African-Americans to play in the National Black Negro Baseball League, playing for the Collierville, Tenn., Tigers from 1950 though the late 1960s. He later coached, until he was 80 years old.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31 at Serenity-Autry Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Willie Hoey and Rev. Michael Stephens officiated.

He leaves four daughters, Gloria Ann Rayford (Marvin), Virginia Ann Jones, both of Holly Springs, Marie Ann Luellen of Red Banks, Victoria Lynn Anderson (Herbert) of Ripley; a son, Henry Lee Luellen of Collierville; two sisters, Martha Sue Anderson of Collierville, Mary Ann Anderson of Joliet, Ill.; a brother, John Nolen of Fayette County; 14 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Dee Mabon, James Nolen Sr., and a sister, Rose Mae Mabon.
