George Roundal Poteet Sr.

George Roundal Poteet Sr., 76, of Collierville, Tenn., passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on July 16, 2024. He was born at home in Mantachie, Mississippi, on February 22, 1948, to James Alfred (Sambo) Poteet and Annie Lue Walker Poteet.

Mr. Poteet, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather and friend, was well known for his generosity and kind heart. He was a star athlete at Mantachie High School , who started his working career at the age of fifteen as a school bus driver. A graduate of Itawamba Community College, he continued his career in the finance field and reitred as an executive with Juice Plus NSA. A member of Central Church, Mr. Poteet formerly attended Lakeland Baptist Church as a youth and was baptized there. A friend to many through the country, his hobbies were collecting classic cars, speed, and the betterment of Holly Springs (a known pillar of the community). He also held the world record for the fastest piston engine (land speed) in auto racing, 471 miles per hour. He was a member of the Memphis Street Rods, the Good Guys, NSRA, the Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame, the Grand National Roadster Hall of Fame, and the HIRA Hall of Fame.

Mr. Poteet is survived by his wife of thirty three years, Cathy Moore Poteet; son, George Roundal Poteet Jr. (Amy) of Holly Springs; daughters, Kimberly Diane Harbert (Brent) of Collierville, Stephanie McOlgan (Jason) of Germantown, Ten., and Bethina Lopez (Bobby) of Bradenton, Florida. He also leaves a sister, Betty Diane Howard of Germantown; eleven grandchildren, Lauren Knight (Phillip), Sarah Dempsey (Taylor), Abbey Harbert, Allison Harbert, Grant Poteet, Anna Harbert, Georgia Grace McOlgan, Tony Lopez, Graham McOlgan, Lily Lopez, and Alivia Lopez; two great grandchildren, Jameson Poteet and Daphne Dempsey, and a niece, Kathryn Howard.

Funeral services for Mr Poteet were held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Central Church (2005 Winchester, Collierville, Tennessee 38017). A visitation for family and friends began at 10 a.m., and continued until the service began at noon. Burial was at Stephens Cemetery, in Mantachie, Mississippi, on Saturday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. The Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Itawamba Historical Society for the George Poteet History Center, P.O. Box 7, Mantachie, Mississippi 38855, or Central Church.

Pallbearers were George Poteet Jr., Grant Poteet, Jameson Poteet, Jason McOlgan, Brent Harbert, Taylor Dempsey, Phillip Knight, and Bobby Lopez.
