Dr. William Walter Wicker

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Dr. William Walter Wicker. He was a man known and loved by many. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.

Walter was a man steeped in his faith. From his birth in Canaan, MS to his death in Waxahachie, TX, that faith never wavered. He was active in his church including being president of his Sunday school class. Walter was a proud member of Rotary for 48 years and served on the wheelchair ramp building committee. He was also awarded the prestigious honor of being named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Walter enjoyed gardening and loved going fishing. He was an avid reader and served on the board of the Friends of Sims Library. He graduated from Ole Miss University for his bachelors, LSU for his masters and Florida State for his doctorate. When he finally retired at 79 he was Dean of Libraries at Louisiana Tech.

He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Nella Harris Wicker; and his children, Nella Carolyn, William Walter Jr. and wife, Beverly and Deborah Lynne. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Fenton Wicker and Willie Thomas Wicker, and his brothers, Ralph Thomas Wicker and Richard Fenton Wicker Jr.

I know I speak for my family when I say not a better man lived. He was our mentor, our rock, and made each of us better people.

Memorial services will be held April 1, 2021, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Sims Public Library or First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie.
