Annis Lyle Fretwell Holbrook

Annis Lyle Fretwell Holbrook, 92, of Holly Springs, went home to be with the Lord on June 16, 2020, after an extended illness. Born Oct. 7, 1927 in Baldwyn, Lee County, to America Jane Lyle and adopted by Mack Fretwell, she was later sent to the Baptist Children's Village in Ridgeland during the Depression. While she was living there she was baptized at the age of nine. She moved back to Tupelo and attended Tupelo School System and graduated in 1946 from Tupelo High School. After graduation she moved to Holly Springs to go to nursing school. While attending nursing school she met James Asa Holbrook and they were married in the pastor's home on Dec. 24, 1946.

To this union they had five children, Loren Eugene, James (Al), Ramona, and Katherine (Katie); and one unborn, Mark.

She was known as Nanny by all. She was faithful and loved her church. She read her Bible at least three times a day. Her hobbies included reading the paper, working crossword puzzles, crocheting afghans, and sewing a lot of clothing for her family and friends. She loved her roses. While married to James Asa they traveled the country. They were married from Dec. 1946 until July 1993, with his passing.

She leaves a son, James(Al-Squirrel) Holbrook (Susan) of Holly Springs; Ramona Holbrook Warren (Danny) of Nettleton; Katherine (Katie) Holbrook of Holly Springs; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Holbrook of Holly Springs; two sistersin-law, Nell Holbrook Means of Puckett, and Jimmie Lou Holbrook Lewis of Eupora; three grandchildren, Thisha (Tish) Holbrook Thompson (Brad) of Southaven, Melissa Diane Warren Criddle (Dallas Quay) of Shannon; Joshua (Josh) Holbrook of Holly Springs; five great-grandchildren, Madeline, Sara, and Collin Culver, all of Southaven, Hunter Holbrook of Potts Camp, Micah Criddle of Shannon; four stepgrandchildren, Cheri Fesmire Simmons, Chris Fesmire, Dada Jeffries, Taylor Humphreys; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Shirley, Mary Elizabeth and Patricia Simmons, and Brandon Jeffries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Asa Holbrook; two sons, Loren Eugene Holbrook and Mark Holbrook; and a daughter-in-law, Jill Anderson Holbrook.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on June 18 at Hill Crest Cemetery in Holly Springs. Dr. Joe T. Lusby of Holly Springs and Dr. Thad Moore of Sturgis officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
