Cards, Pats, Indians, Devils lose road games

The road was unkind to four area football teams last week. Losing away games were Potts Camp, Marshall Academy, Byhalia and Ashland.

Chris Daniels, head coach of the Cardinals, said the Myrtle Hawks “hit us in the mouth and we didn’t hit back.” Potts Camp fell 42-6 with its only touchdown coming on a run by Malachi Brownlee.

“Our defense had them in third-and fourth-down situations several times in the first half, but we couldn’t get off the field,” Daniels said.

The Cardinals (1-1) have an open date this week.

Marshall Academy and Lee Academy hooked up in a back-and-forth game at Clarksdale. The Patriots led 28-26 at halftime, but the Colts snatched the momentum in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns on their way to a 49-35 win.

“Lee is a good football team, and for the second week in a row, we didn’t capitalize on some big opportunities, both offensively and defensively, throughout the game,” said Jake Hill, head coach of the Patriots.

MA tallied three touchdowns on the ground, 12-yard and 86-yard runs by Brennan Smith and a 3-yard quarterback keeper by Zane Hill. Brayden Thompson reeled in a pair of touchdown catches, one covering 65 yards and the other 15 yards.

The Patriots (0-3) host Magnolia Heights (3-0) this Friday night.

The Byhalia Indians dropped a 31-0 decision at Independence Friday night, while Ashland lost 45-26 at Mantachie.

Those two teams, the Indians (1-1) and the Blue Devils (0-2), meet this Friday night in Byhalia’s homecoming game.
