Teams tune up before openers

As expected, three Marshall County head football coaches saw room for improvement after a Friday night jamboree.

“We have to improve up front,” said Potts Camp’s Chris Daniels, who hosted the jamboree. “Our offensive line play is the big thing right now.”

He said he liked the way his Cardinals moved the football at times versus Holly Springs but consistency is key.

“There are a few things we need to clean up,” he said. “Defensively, I thought we played well.” Potts Camp hosts Strayhorn Friday night to start the season.

Clifford Brown of Holly Springs called his team “a work in progress.” “I saw more good than bad,” he said about the two-quarter contest against the Cardinals. “The kids played hard and played together.” The Hawks open the campaign Friday night at home versus Mantachie.

Reginald Davis’ Byhalia squad played Falkner in the jamboree, the same team they faced in the spring jamboree.

“Falkner is very well coached,” he said. “It was a good experience for our guys to get some live reps.” The Indians host county rival H.W. Byers Thursday night.

“It will be a quick turnaround for us to play our home opener on Thursday,” Davis said. “Our program is looking forward to the challenge.”
