Lady Patriots begin season with win
The Marshall Academy softball team started a new season in fine fashion.
The Lady Patriots visited Senatobia Wednesday, July 29, and knocked off rival Magnolia Heights 7-2. Bailey Thomas led the opening-day offense with two hits and two runs scored, while teammate Maddie Hudson stole three bases and scored three runs.
MA produced seven hits. Aubrey Brigance, Kyleigh Milliorn and Esme Cavender each had one hit and one runbatted-in. Also adding one each were Hudson and KayLynn Coey. Olivia Smith had an RBI.
Kendall Matthews pitched four innings and picked up the win from the circle. She struck out two, walked two and gave up three hits. Cavender tossed three innings in relief. She gave up two hits and walked one.
The Lady Patriots went up 3-0 with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Lady Chiefs scored one in the bottom of the fourth. Marshall then tucked the win away with solo runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh.
Coach Jamie Rappa’s squad is busy this week. MA visited Calhoun Academy and Bayou Academy on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. The Lady Pats host DeSoto School Wednesday. This Saturday, Aug. 8, they will play in the Copiah Tournament.
