Smoke Signals

Musings on travel, scams, and resilience

Although my health isn’t the best, I am currently making preparations for a trip I never expected to make. Again, I am off on an adventure with my daughter Ellen’s family. Stand by.....I will share stories as we go. A nearby family will care for my old cat. She will be upset with me when I get back. Charlie, the little spoiled dog, will stay with my other daughter, Emily, and her three very active large dogs. He loves visiting them and comes home dirty and tired from running and playing in the yard.

I have meant to share this simple recipe for some time. This is just a snack I have come to enjoy. Mix together ½ cup peanut butter and half-cup pure honey and heat just enough to melt. Pour over three cups of plain Cheerios. Mix together and enjoy. Store in an airtight container. I probably eat too much.

I have been able to cut my grass three times this season. After the first cut, I had to rest in bed for days. After the second cut, I had to rest more than usual but not in bed. The third cut wore me out, but I was able to cut the full three hours without a break. That has to mean improvement overall for me!

If you tried to go to the tournament in Holly Springs, I know you were disappointed. Unfortunately, we had to move it to Potts Camp who graciously agreed to take it on at the last minute. I am grateful for the flexibility of our parks and teams. It is hard to believe the season is nearly over. As always, the kids have been awesome.

Beware! Scammers are getting more convincing. The call came Friday from Washington, D.C. I hit the decline button. They called right back. I answered. Supposedly, I had a large balance on a credit card I definitely had never applied for. They had very convincing details. I knew it was fake when they claimed to be from the Federal Reserve Bank because I was 60 days behind on my payment. They gave me the credit card number, all the bank details, when it was opened, and advised if I didn’t take care of it in two hours, they would deduct it from any bank account associated with my social security number. I advised them that no one called and gave you two hours to pay something. They wanted to transfer me to the FBI to file an incident report. I declined and asked for the number to the “FBI” to call later. When I checked out the number it was associated with a scam-not the FBI. They insisted they will be calling me back Monday to take care of this matter. I will be ready for them.

In the midst of the heat, one of my workers told me the old refrigerator in the garage had died apparently several days ago and the food was just a bit rotten. So glad they were able to remove it from the garage and dispose of it. There is one at my father’s house bought in 1952 to keep milk in for me that still runs. Maybe I just need to get it!
