Hawks start season 3-0

The Holly Springs High School baseball team, under the leadership of a new coach, is off to a blistering start in 2026.

Coach Sam Greer’s squad scored 58 runs in its first three games, all decisive wins.

The Hawks opened the season Thursday, March 19, with a 16-11 road win over H.W. Byers.

Joshua Walker carried the big bat. He drove in five runs with a triple, double and single. Braylen Robinson followed with two singles and four runs-batted-in. Karlo Strickland had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Derwin Hamer picked up the pitching win. He struck out nine.

Next up was a District 1-3A doubleheader versus rival North Panola. Holly Springs crushed the Cougars 25-11 and 17-7.

In the 14-run win, pitching leaders were Walker with four strikeouts and Hamer with three.

Walker continued to carry the big bat. He again had a triple, double and single and drove in five runs. Jeremiah Dowdy had a triple and single and five RBIs. Braylon Alexander doubled for two RBIs.

Hamer fanned 10 North Panola batters in the nightcap as the Hawks won by 10. Walker, in his mound work, struck out three.

A red hot Walker drove in six runs with two doubles and two singles. Dowdy followed with a triple and a single and two RBIs, and Strickland knocked in a pair of runs with a double.

The Hawks (3-0) were scheduled to host Coahoma County on Tuesday of this week in a district contest. They then travel to Coahoma County Thursday. Next Tuesday, April 7, they host district opponent Independence.
