Hawks lose in round one
The basketball season ended for the Holly Springs Hawks in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
The Hawks went on the road and dropped a 65-55 decision to Alcorn Central on Tuesday night, Feb. 17. The Bears won the rebound battle 39 to 33, and Holly Springs hit just 10 of 20 free-throw attempts and three of 16 shots from beyond the three-point line.
Top scorers for the Hawks were Jaylen Cassidy and Christopher Hale with 17 each and Jasiah Johnson with 14. Cassidy also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Jeremiah Dowdy had eight.
Holly Springs, which finished the season with a 13-15 record, trailed Alcorn Central 13-12 after the first quarter, 3018 at the half and 54-37 after the third. The Hawks outscored the Bears 18-11 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough.
Another boys team from Marshall County also lost in round one of the post-season. The Potts Camp Cardinals, playing on the road, were eliminated in Class 1A by Pine Grove, 65-47.
