Marshall sweeps Rossville, Lee
A four-win week in District 1-3A play for Marshall Academy basketball teams was highlighted by the Patriots’ overtime victory at home over Rossville Christian Academy.
Marshall squads swept both Rossville and Lee Academy as tourney time nears. The district event is set for January 29-31 on the MA campus in Holly Springs.
The Patriots avenged an earlier-season loss to the Wolves, taking the 52-50 thriller Tuesday night, Jan. 13. Both teams continue to be highly-ranked in their classification.
“I’m really proud of the toughness my guys showed in the game,” said Jeff Dalton, head coach of the MA boys. “We were down five with 2:30 to go and stayed poised to force overtime.”
Marshall led Rossville 23-22 at halftime and fell behind in the third quarter before rallying.
Finishing with 12 points each for the Patriots were Carlos Young, Kaleb Luse and Makhi Finley. Brett Hicks added nine.
For the Wolves, Seth Williams dropped in a gamehigh 16 points. Tripp Taylor contributed 12.
Nine Lady Patriots scored in a 58-22 rout of Rossville in the first game on Tuesday, Jan. 13. They were on top 28-9 at halftime. Leading the offensive outburst for the home team was Gabrielle Marion, who tallied 18 points, including four threes. Gracie Rappa was also in double-digit scoring with 10.
Shae Thomas was Rossville’s leading scorer with nine points.
On Friday night of last week in Clarksdale versus Lee, both Marshall squads coasted to wins. The Patriots won 63-31 and the Lady Patriots 43-14.
Young and Luse powered the MA boys attack with 23 and 14 points, respectively. Hicks scored nine.
Danielle Thomas led a balanced scoring effort by the Marshall girls. She scored 10, including a pair of threes.
