Smoke Signals and other news

Sweet grandson is a keeper

The weather, although warm for September and October, has been nice. Somehow this week before the rain arrives, I have to give my grass what I hope is the final trim for the season. It is easier to cut now that much of the yard has been cleaned up and at least most of the scrub bushes and such have been removed.

We have a neighborhood dog that has adopted my handyman as his person. We know where he came from, and he is now cared for. He follows the handyman to wherever he is working in the area that day. Somehow, he missed when his person left my house one day this week. I noticed he was still here during the night when I had Charlie outside. I thought that was odd. We discovered the next morning he had slept on the seat of my mower waiting for his person to return. That is dedication.

I still have one hummingbird feeder up and almost every day one hummer stops by for a refuel on his journey South. I will leave it out as long as they are stopping by.

On Saturday night I finally got to meet the newest great grandson. He is a keeper for sure. His big brothers are enthralled with him and there does not seem to be any jealousy. They love helping with his care. They are not overly concerned with who comes and goes as long as baby brother stays. Even when Mom and Dad left for a date, they were fine as long as they did not take the baby with them.

If you live in an area where your board of alderman meet, attend those meetings when possible. Much is decided in these meetings that ultimately has an effect on your life, even if you do not live within the city limits. These meetings are open to the public unless they go into executive session. Some towns allow a time for public comment, while others do not. If you have a legitimate reason to speak before the board, you can request to be placed on the agenda.

Most of our local animal shelters are full, with the majority run by volunteers. There are so many animals living on their own doing the best they can and there is no room for them in a shelter. Do you have room for a pet in your life? If you do, these shelters will help you find the one that is right for you. My boy never made it to a shelter. He was thrown out like trash and lived on his own until a friend rescued him at around five months of age. After a time, he figured out he was safe with us and has brought many hours of companionship. My family has kepted many dogs and cats and a few other pets over the years. Only one was bought from a puppy mill at a discounted price. It was truly a rescue because he was considered large for his breed, making him hard to sell. We have had inside pets and those who loved being outside pets but always with shelter. If you have a pet, please consider having them spayed or neutered.
