County orders fire truck for Trail substation
Marshall County has ordered a 100-foot ladder truck to be used to provide fire protection to the industries in Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park.
County administrator Tim Powell said at the July 7 meeting of the board the new truck has a price tag of $1.9 million but when outfitted will run about $2 million.
The Marshall County Board of Supervisors built the Eddie and Maxine Dixon Emergency Response Center to provide ambulance service, law enforcement protection and fire protection to the commercial and industrialized Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park.
The next medic station to be built is Medic Station #1 that will be built behind the Sheriff’s Department. That will place a medic station in each district and one additional one dedicated to the Trail.
Contracts with the volunteer fire departments have been signed by the board of supervisors, according to Powell. He said the volunteer fire departments will each be given $20,000 from the millage rate and the departments will also receive fire insurance rebate money from the state of Mississippi to the county.
Powell said the Mississippi Development Authority is supplying $610,000 in DIP grant (Mississippi Department of Infrastructure Program) funds for the expansion of South Barringer Road.
Both north and south Barringer Road expansion projects are underway to ease traffic in the industrial area in the Trail.
Powell presented pay requests from Elliott and Britt Engineering for the following work: • $162,448 for work on Project Poppy.
• $12,000 for the Blackwater Road bridge raise project.
• $36,268 for the engineering on Hyline Drive sewer improvement project.
• $81,250 for engineering in January on the Barringer Road North project; $40,628 for April on Barringer Road; and $8,125 for July work on Barringer Road.
Powell said two dates have been selected for town hall meetings to be conducted by Slaughter and Associates to report on the comprehensive plan and ordinance work. The meeting will be conducted in Courtroom B on Thursday, July 24 at 6 p.m. And another on Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m.
Powell said people can pick one of the two dates where they will be apprised on what the planners are doing. The entire general public in the county is invited to attend one of these meetings.
In other business, supervisors:
• approved payment of $1,011 to Ricky D. Harris for repair of the brick wall at the courthouse.
• discussed trouble with road signs being taken down. Supervisors discussed purchasing plastic road signs.
“I’ve replaced three since I’ve been here,” said District 2 supervisor Johnny Walker.
• learned that garbage pickup is not going well in the county when bulk material is left out beside the garbage canisters.
• approved travel for three justice court deputy clerks to attend 2-day seminars in Biloxi.
• approved travel for Tim Powell to attend the MASIT law enforcement risk management course.
• approved claims docket for $823,371.
• authorized travel for the two constables to attend training in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
