Subject charged with first degree murder

A Marshall County man was arrested and charged with first degree murder early Monday following an all night search that began Sunday night after 10 p.m., according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

Officers received a call Sunday, June 29 shortly before 10 p.m., regarding an assault at the 400 block of River Ridge Circle near Barton. “Upon arrival of Marshall

County uniformed officers, they discovered a white female screaming very loudly stating “help me, my dad is not breathing,' “ Dickerson said.

Subsequent investigations identified the suspect as Jaleyone Young, 28, who was living at the same address with the subjects girlfriend and her father, the sheriff said.

The girlfriend had been severely assaulted receiving a broken nose and laceration in her forehead and her father lay on the floor. He had been beaten about the face and strangled, the sheriff said.

The brother of the girlfriend who lived nearby, came to the scene and ordered the subject to get off his father and the subject fled the scene on foot into a wooded area, Dickerson said. The son tried to perform CPR on his father but was unable to revive him.

DeSoto County arrived with its K-9 team and searched in the wooded area without locating the subject and Marshall County set up a perimeter and patrolled throughout the night looking for Young, he said.

Shortly before daylight around 5 a.m. Monday, June 30, Young was spotted by patrolling officers walking on Highway 309 not very far from the home where the incident took place, took Young into custody and brought him to the Marshall County Jail where he was booked and charged with first degree murder and domestic aggravated assault Dickerson said.

Dickerson said the argument between Young and his girlfriend was related to Young taking her car earlier in the day without her permission.

There were only three occupants of the residence, Young, the girlfriend and her father, the sheriff said.

The girlfriend went to Methodist Olive Branch for treatment and was released.

The victim was the father of Young's girlfriend and a lifelong resident of Marshall County aged about 71.

Dickerson said when the victim tried to intervene on behalf of his daughter who was being assaulted by Young, the subject jumped on her father and beat him about the head and body and choked him.

Young was on Federal probation following a firearm-related robbery at a pawn shop several years ago in the Watson area where he took numerous firearms, the sheriff said.

Young gave two addresses when booked, the residence in the Barton area and a location on Martin Luther King Drive in Holly Springs, the sheriff said.
