Supporting our local farmers

It appears the dog days have hit with the official day of summer starting June 20. If it has not been pouring rain, it has been miserably hot. We have been fortunate enough to have both in the same day the past week or so with what I have always called “heat lightening.”

Also another “welcome to summer” reminder is the Farmer’s Market on the square in town. Every Saturday morning, the strip of the courthouse lawn is covered in tents with vendors peddling gifts from their gardens, plants, breads, jams and jellies. If you are an early riser, it is worth meandering through there and picking up some goodies.

As always, Carpenter Farms does not disappoint. Summer also signifies they are open, in their spot, for business. They are always chocked full of every vegetable or fruit you could possibly imagine, as well as hanging baskets, starter plants and a menagerie of homemade spreads. They are open Monday through Saturday all summer long.

Carpenters also sets up in Olive Branch at their farmers market. This past Saturday, my Daddy shopped Carpenters for peaches and tomatoes, as well as a local baker from Desoto county for banana bread.

It is so important to support your local farmers, growers of the incredible, key ingredients we all need for our favorite summer dishes. Do not forget if you are traveling, all those summer veggies travel well, too.
