Sharpe named to All-State Team
Phillip Sharpe concluded his high school baseball career with a couple of big honors.
The member of the Marshall Academy Class of 2025 played in the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools All-Star Baseball Game and was also named to the MAIS All-State Baseball Team for Class 4A.
“The development Phillip has shown just proves the type of kid and worker he is,” MA Head Coach Dustin Skelton said about the pitcher/infielder. “He was always first to the field and last to leave.”
Sharpe's improvement from his junior to senior season was huge, Skelton said. The coach said Sharpe struggled some with command on the mound and did not have the year offensively he hoped for as an 11th grader.
“But he got back to work and really made strides,” Skelton said. “He was a team captain this year and just the epitome of what Marshall Academy baseball is all about.”
Sharpe pitched 47 innings in the recent season, which ended in the state semi-finals. His earned-run-average was 1.78. He gave up 27 hits and struck out 74.
The senior batted .314 with 38 hits and 27 runs-batted-in. He only struck out eight times. His on-base percentage was .375 and his on-base plus slugging percentage was .755. He earned 10 walks.
Sharpe will play baseball for the Meridian Community College Eagles next season.
“Phillip is a first-class student and just very professional as he handles his business in a first-class manner,” Coach Skelton said. “I'm going to miss him next year.”
