Arrests made in four cases
Marshall County Sheriff's Deputies worked four cases over the weekend and Monday, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
On Monday, a 13-year-old female was kidnapped in Memphis, Tenn., and brought to Mississippi to a location off Cayce Road, where the child was allegedly sexually assaulted at a mobile home at the Grove of Cayce, the sheriff said.
The victim was later released by her alleged abductor at a location near Farley Road and made her way to a residence where she asked for help, he said.
Law enforcement responded to the location and the child's mother and a Memphis Police Officer were notified the child was found.
The victim was taken into the sheriff's department where she received support by a female deputy and where she provided a description of the suspect.
Officers took the child back to the location where she was allegedly assaulted and visually identified her abductor in the area near where she was assaulted, Dickerson said. She provided a description of the suspect vehicle located at the Grove of Cayce. The driver of the suspect vehicle was located outside a residence and the victim visually identified the suspect, the sheriff said.
A female deputy medically examined the child for forensic evidence needed for a court of law, the sheriff said.
“After completion of the necessary exams, she will be released to the custody of her mother,” Dickerson said.
The subject is identified as Tadarius Harris, 21, of the 100 block of Christopher Circle, Byhalia.
Dickerson said Harris was arraigned Tuesday in Justice Court on charges of kidnapping and sexual battery. The sheriff is asking the court to hold Harris without bond due to the nature of the charges.
Case 2, looting
On Saturday, May 10, a theft was reported off a residential drive leading off Hogan Road in the Slayden area, the sheriff said. Numerous items were reported taken and a suspect was arrested a short time following the theft. Dickerson said a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle was spotted by deputies at a motel near the Mississippi/Tennessee line on Highway 72. The stolen items were in full view in the bed of the pickup, he said. The suspect was apprehended in a motel room and arrested. Items taken and recovered included tools, copper tubing, automotive parts and miscellaneous household items, valued at several hundred dollars, the sheriff said. The suspect, Arthur Jason Owen, 49, of the 200 block of Lake Shore Drive, Potts Camp, was taken into custody and charged under statute 97-17-65 of the Mississippi Code as annotated in 1972.
Dickerson said the looting statute can be used when a suspect knowingly and without authority of the owner, enters a home or establishment where normal security is absent due to emergencies such as a hurricane, fire, riot, etc. Punishment for conviction under the looting statute can include sentencing of up to 15 years and a fine not to exceed $10,000 or both, he said.
Case 3, shooting
Upon a call to a residence in the 1000 block of Lee Creek Road on Friday, May 9 around 1:15 a.m. Regarding a shooting, deputies arrived on the scene to find a male subject lying on his side in the living room of a residence holding a towel to his chest, the sheriff said. A female in the residence told officers a hispanic male had shot the victim and identified the suspect as Luis Carlo Nieto, 35, of the 190 block of Bennett Circle south of Byhalia. The victim was transported to the Regional One Health in Memphis. A search of the property outdoors near a gate the victim had opened turned up a single spent 45 caliber shell casing near the gate. Nieto was charged with attempted murder and was arraigned Monday. Bond was set at $150,000, the sheriff said.
Case 4, fugitive arrest
Friday, May 9 around 4 p.m. Officers spotted a suspect, who was on the lam for several months, near the Marshall County Fairgrounds, the sheriff said.
Officers initiated pursuit on Highway 7 North where the suspect made a turn into a business driveway, stopped the vehicle, and the subject fled into a wooded area near the business location, he said.
Two officers chased the suspect on foot and a short time later apprehended the suspect and took him into custody. A female accomplice was also in the pickup with the suspect and escaped into the woods as well.
Her identity is known and a warrant for her arrest is forthcoming, Dickerson said.
The suspect, Broderick Cassell Wright, 40, of the 100 block of Ambrose Drive in the Atway community, was arrested and taken into custody. Wright was arraigned in circuit court Tuesday, May 13, on indictments of receiving stolen property and on a domestic charge, Dickerson said.
Arresting officers located a discarded semi-automatic weapon with extended magazine beside the pickup the suspects were driving.
