When someone is 6’6”, they tend to stand out in a crowd, for sure a head above most in a room. When someone is 6’6” and a dual sport athlete (a threat in both sports), they tend to garner attention. That is exactly what has happened with Betty and Rodney Whaley’s grandson, Jon Grey Morrisson. He lit the state on fire with his basketball prowess back in the winter and has just been named the 2025 MHSAA Mr. Baseball.
Morrisson is a junior at West Union Attendance Center. He is coached in baseball by Ashley Russell, who spoke at the awards ceremony Wednesday in Jackson. Parents of athletes both young and in junior varsity and varsity sports – you can only hope and pray a coach will stand in front of a room full of incredibly talented athletes and not discuss your child’s ability, but his character. Knowing Morrison personally and what a fine human being he is is one thing. To hear a coach who has seen his true highs and lows discuss what great character he has was something to behold. Out of all of the baseball accolades he has had just this season, Coach Russell chose to speak about what an amazing all around person Morrisson is, how valuable he is in his community, a true leader on and off of the field.
Setting an example for the younger bunch coming afterwards should be every athletes goal, to show them you can succeed not only on a ball field or in a gym, but also in the hallways of your school. To be mindful of others and how they perceive you is a fine attribute to have. Morrisson fulfills his role at West Union doing just that – speaking to the younger students knowing the impact that will have on them. Your character is all you have in this life that is truly yours. Morrisson certainly has a fine one and in spades. Being chosen Mr. Baseball is just icing on the cake for this young man’s junior year. I, for one, am extremely excited to see where he lands after high school.
Tammy Cupp is always the hostess with the mostest. Her home serves as a perfect backdrop for a Kentucky Derby watch party Saturday. Party goers all wore fabulous hats and fascinators. They were treated to a variety of scrumptious appetizers accompanied by delicious mint juleps to quench their thirst.
