Smoke Signals and other news

A busy Saturday in Byhalia

One of the men who does a bit of work for me outside let me know there was a water leak near the well – always a frightening thought. Is the well itself, the tank, or the least expensive alternative-the faucet broken below the surface again? I made the usual call for repairs while the water continued to bubble from the ground and run down the hill to water the pasture. While this is important to me as it runs up the electric bill and puts undue use on the well, it is not a top priority job as would be someone who has no water. I fully understand that. After a day or so wait, I decided I could turn my well and water heater off when not in use and turn the breaker back on occasionally for essential water needs. I did a quick load of laundry and ran the dishwasher and turned off the breakers content that at least I wasn't wasting water. Bright and early the next morning, my well person, Bradley Mason, arrived, determined it was a broken faucet again and went right to work making the necessary repairs. The joys of country life.

April showers certainly bring May flowers but can wreak havoc on baseball games as both Byhalia and Potts Camp witnessed firsthand this week. Some nights Potts Camp had to cancel completely and one night played through the rain. Byhalia played through the rain one night. This is only allowed if there is no lightening in the area and the field remains safe to play on. On Thursday night, Byhalia attempted to finish a game in the rain when we looked up and saw a “wall” of water headed for the field. The ballgame was called and attempts were made to escape to the concession stand or head for cars. Very few people left there dry for sure. I, for one, was completely soaked.

Exercise class this week was a bit peppier than usual as we tried working out a bit to songs from the seventies. This put a bit more work on muscles but most of us were able to push through it. I had to stop a few times as I have only been to a few classes, but I can tell the difference in my body after those few. Come join us at 10 a.m. On Wednesday mornings at the Flame behind the Methodist Church in Byhalia.

Saturday was a busy day around Byhalia. Refuge Church held their annual Crawfish Boil, the Chamber of Commerce held their Spring Clean Up Day, and the Byhalia Ball Fields were full with ball players and parents most of the day. I know there were other activities also with plenty of choices for everyone. It’s a great time of year to enjoy God’s creation of the great outdoors. I was certainly reminded of my age on Saturday as I made pictures of many of our ball players and realized that I had made pictures of their parents when they played many years ago.
