Lady Cards start series with win

The raindrops didn't dampen the success of the Potts Camp Lady Cardinals in game one of their secondround softball series versus Smithville.

Coach Cory Gray's team, playing at home, used a big four-run fifth inning to turn back the Lady Seminoles 8-6 Thursday in the Class 1A State Tournament.

Alyssa Clifton went the distance from the circle and picked up the victory in game one. She struck out 11, gave up seven hits and walked four.

Charlie Holmes led a sevenhit Potts Camp offensive attack with three hits and two runsbatted-in. Clifton had a hit, plus she crossed the plate three times in the two-run victory. Getting one hit apiece were Haley Ackerman, Harlynn Stephens and Kaylee Howell.

The Lady Cards trailed 6-2 going to the bottom of the fifth. They tallied four in the bottom of that inning to tie the contest and then scored two more in the sixth to win it and improve their season record to 16-2.

Potts Camp swept Falkner, 4-1 and 11-1 in round one of the playoffs. The winner of the Potts Camp-Smithville secondround series advances to meet Myrtle in the next round.
