Catchball Tournament
After a rigorous week of taking Benchmark practice State tests, the Byhalia Elementary School students welcomed some fun, and competitive time of relaxation before Spring Break. On March 7th, the Byhalia Elementary School third and fourth-grade classes participated in a Catchball Tournament in the school gym. Catchball is a sport that uses the same rules as volleyball except the players catch and then throw the ball over the net rather than striking the ball. Catchball is a lead-up game to the sport of volleyball. The BES students have been playing Catchball in their Physical Education classes with Coach C.B. McClatchy teaching them the rules and strategies of the game.
Each fourth-grade homeroom fielded a team in the tournament. Mrs. Whitmore's Stars team was victorious over Ms. Strickland's Panthers team in the first match. Ms. Jones's Jaguars team won over Ms. McMillens's Champs squad. Ms. Jones's Jaguars defeated Mrs. Whitmore's Stars team in a close match to claim the title of BES Fourth Grade Champions.
The Third Grade Tournament came next with each homeroom class entering a team. The tournament started with Mrs. Popes' Pacers team winning over Mr. Williams's Grizzlies squad. Next it was Mrs. Lockler's Lakers downing Ms. Smith's Suns team. Then Pope's Pacers defeated Lockler's Lakers to become the BES Third Grade Champions.
Finally in the overall championship contest, Ms. Jones's Jaguars fourth-grade team defeated Mrs. Pope's Pacers third-grade team to claim the BES Catchball Tournament Championship and the bragging rights.
This was an exciting and fun activity that was enjoyed by all of the third and fourth-grade teachers, staff, administrators, and students. It was a great way to celebrate the hard work BES students did during their week of Benchmark testing.
