Smoke Signals and other news
Get those Hummingbird feeders out and cleaned and stock up on bags of sugar. Our little feathered entertainers could arrive as soon as this week. At least the scouts will be here looking for their best feeding spots until they leave sometime in October. If you don't plan to feed them until time for them to migrate south, then don't start. Remember, you don't need to buy Hummingbird food. Just boil and cool some water and mix four parts water to one part sugar. No need to add food coloring. Some weeks they will eat more than other weeks. I know mine let me know I need to refill if I forget.
The week has gone by quickly. Some of the things I planned to complete were done and other things had to be pushed back a week. A computer malfunction caused me to have to recreate a lengthy file. Even though I save the file, it was simply gone. Some things I would like to accomplish will probably never happen, but I keep trying. Although there weren't many entries on my calendar, every day was full.
I hope you enjoyed the Profile Edition of The South Reporter. Lots of work goes into putting that together and each story is about someone's life and passion. I know the people I interviewed were excited to share a bit of their life. As I often say, everyone has a story.
Baseball and softball players have turned out in the county in record numbers. Games will start in mid-April with a preseason jamboree followed by league games. Only a few ages/teams can still accept players. Check with your local league if you still want to signup you child, but it may be too late for this season.
While some of us go about our everyday busy lives and try to be good citizens, believe me when I say there are those out there who only want to steal, use drugs, drink excessively, and beat up or kill other people. Unfortunately, my world often crosses with these folks as it did this week. I grew up believing everyone was good and honest as that was what I was taught and naively thought everyone else was. Those first encounters with other ways of life were tough lessons. I still tend to trust too much but am learning to look below the surface more and more.
Our fundraiser known as Wheels for Bryson will take place Saturday, March 22, from noon to 6 p.m. At Victory Church at 21 Vinson Road in Byhalia. We will have BBQ plates, desserts, gospel singing, some craft vendors, T-shirt sales, a petting zoo from 4:30 p.m. To 5:30 p.m., raffles and a silent auction. If you would like to donate anything for the raffle or silent auction, we will gladly arrange for pickup, or items can be left at Byhalia Nutrition Shop at 2457 Church Street. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Help us help this child get a badly needed van, a walk-in shower, and a new wheelchair ramp.
