Rust women's basketball concludes with hard-fought tournament
The Rust College Bearcats Women’s Basketball team wrapped up an eventful season with a bittersweet finish in the inaugural HBCUAC Athletic Conference Tournament. As the 7th-seed team, the Bearcats battled fiercely in the second round against 2nd-seed Dillard University, ultimately falling 57-59 in a nail-biting contest. The game remained close throughout until the final 30 seconds, when a series of costly turnovers allowed Dillard to build a lead and seal the victory with critical free throws.
The season marked an important milestone for the program, as the Bearcats advanced by winning their firstround matchup against SUNO (Southern University of New Orleans) with a 64-61 victory. Finishing the season with an overall record of 12-16 and a conference record of 9-9, the Bearcats exceeded preseason expectations by finishing 7th in the conference – one spot higher than the predicted 8th. This season was particularly significant as it marked the first year under Head Coach Jalessa Sams, who made her debut at Rust College as a head coach. Coach Sams led the team with determination and a fresh vision for the program, laying the foundation for future success.
“Although we fell just short in the tournament, I couldn’t be prouder of our team’s effort and the progress we’ve made this season,” said Head CoachJalessa Sams. “Our achievements, from the historic win over SUNO to exceeding preseason expectations, are the first building blocks for a program we’re committed to developing. I believe the experiences of this season will only make us stronger in the years to come.”
