A week of fever, weakness and a rash

It was a week I do not want to repeat, ever.

Monday, a good Physical Therapy Appointment and a couple hours of work at Byhalia Town Hall completing registration for T-ball, softball, and baseball. I came home and did a bit of cleaning and painting. Someday, the painting part will be done but we all know the cleaning is never done. Tuesday it was more painting and cleaning and the Byhalia Board of Alderman meeting. Wednesday, I had planned to start back going to Yoga in Byhalia but just did not feel up to it. I made it to the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce meeting later that day.

Thursday, my plans were to attend Mary Ann Cooper’s visitation but again the body failed me. I went to my final physical therapy session and pushed through it. Arriving back home, I took care of the animals and went to bed. Shortly after that I realized I had fever, very unusual for me. Hours of fever and weakness followed.

Friday was to be a full day of applying for my passport for an unexpected upcoming trip, attending Marvin St. John’s visitation and seeing my liver specialist to discuss progress with the liver medication – all canceled. Fever continued – no other real symptoms – what was this-flu, strep, COVID? Late in the day I discovered a strange rash covering most of my body. I don’t know when it started as I had been in bed under the cover for two days. It was too late for a doctor that day and I tend to avoid ER’s.

Saturday morning, I found a very nice clinic that was open. Bloodwork, test for strep and COVID, both of which were negative. My rash was intensifying and beginning to itch. My diagnosis was severe allergic reaction to the liver medication that has been discussed in this column-almost wished it had been strep or COVID. I was prescribed a steroid shot-which always keeps me awake all night, two prescriptions, and two over-the-counter medications with a stern warning to stop the medication and be prepared to go to ER if warranted. I was home with all my new medications and basically in bed until late Sunday. I was still weak. I managed a few chores – very few and nothing as to painting or putting this house back in order.

During my preparation for applying for my passports, I had to pull my original birth certificate from the safe deposit box. Two surprises came from this – first, it was not a certified copy and one had to be ordered – second, I have been spelling my middle name differently than it is on my birth certificate for 74 years. I was named after my aunt and she spells hers the way I spell mine, so who knows the real story. Ironically, when my granddaughter was named after me, her mom spelled her name the way it is on my birth certificate.

Sign those kids up for ball this week in Byhalia, Holly Springs, and Potts Camp.
