North dominates MHSAA state championship titles

Now that championship week is over, we can look back and say the North half took over the Mississippi Coliseum the last two weeks. Nine of the fourteen champions represented the north. But what stood out was the basketball teams at Ingomar High School. Not only have the girls team dominated in the past, but the boys are also building something special. H.W Byers Lions came up just short of the title game. But seeing the smallest school in the state, Blue Mountain High School Lady Cougars, ‘Super Six,’ win its first championship in history was a feel-good moment.

Booneville High School completed its three-peat (three consecutive championships), defeating Cohoama County High School in a thriller. Many have already begun picking Booneville to finish the job yet again.

Finally, what would the celebration of the north’s dominance at state be without celebrating the Olive Branch High School’s Conquistador’s wild run to a state championship? Both semi-final and final games for the Conquistadors came down to one-possession games; talk about being on edge.

As we close out another spectacular season in basketball, the South can have football, but when it comes to the North – basketball will forever live north of Rankin County.
