A cookbook everyone will want to buy
The cookbooks many have been waiting for have arrived and are on sale. It’s the Slayden Baptist Church cookbook, the 9th edition. This year, the cookbook commemorates the church’s 150th anniversary and is titled “Celebration Edition Cookbook.” The cookbook has a dedicated section to Katey Jones, a familiar face in the Slayden, who brought joy with her baking. Jones passed away on Sept. 14, 2021, at the age of 49. The section is called ‘Kathy’s Treats.’
A co-worker and friend, Faye Cook, said Katey was known for the delicious food she would prepare and her recipes. Jones did not only understand how to cook and bake, but she excelled at it.
Jones was responsible for putting together the previous six editions of the church cookbook. Cooking was her passion.
Many knew her as Aunt Katey. Her cupcakes and cakes were something to be treasured. I want to try her Red Velvet Cake recipe; I imagine it’s yummy.
The church stated in the cookbook, “We are grateful for Katey’s passion for baking and cooking, and we hope that having this section of recipes to honor her will allow that passion to live on forever.”
Many have past editions of this famous cookbook. This edition has mouthwatering desserts, breads, appetizers and entrees, and more. Kelly Cunningham, whom many may know, has several recipes, but I want to try the Cranberry Jalapeño Dip and Marry Me Chicken. Sherry Carpenter’s famous Iron Skillet Pepperoni Pizza and delicious squash casserole can be found in the book. I am a bread, rolls, and pastries person, and I cannot wait to try Dinah Kay Lundine’s Sourdough Bread recipe and Judy Hurdle’s Mexican Cornbread recipe. Barbara Taylor’s Chicken Tortellini and her Cowboy Beef and Bean Skillet recipe are good to try, too, but there are many to choose from.
The first edition was printed in 1983 as a fundraiser for the Slayden Baptist Church youth to attend camp. In the forward, the church said the church family and the community have rallied around this project by collecting and submitting their personal and family favorites and recipes handed down through generations. The church also said they included some classic recipes from past editions.
Anita Crawford, Charlotte Farris, Onita Jamieson, Dinah Kay Lundine, Vicki Rodgers, and Jeanine Steele are on the committee for this project.
The family enjoys good recipes, and some are passed down from generation to generation. In some families, it is customary to hand down the recipes.
In our country, it is customary to hand down the recipes to the next generation. We call that inheritance. So, to get your latest edition of some of the county’s greatest recipes, this cookbook is a must. I know I will enjoy the one I purchased.
It is on sale at the Bank of Holly Springs on the square, Bank of Holly Springs South Branch, Slayden Bank in Lamar, and the church. Slayden Baptist Church is located at 2534 Highway 72, Lamar. You can go to their website for more information: slaydenbaptist.com.
