I personally have not attended a graduation since Grady, which was hardly one at all due to Covid restrictions. For his, five students and two parents were allowed on the football field at a time. Like we did not even see other graduates or their people at all, as there were literally shifts making certain nobody interacted. It was the most bizarre thing ever, albeit Grady’s group of five were the Hall of Fame recipients, as well as two being the Sal and Val, and an innumerable amount of scholarships amongst them.
Attending Friday night’s graduation of the class of 2023 at Marshall Academy was how it should be - standing room only, parents, family and friends supporting the graduates. It was beautifully orchestrated (although historically, dress code was of the utmost importance for graduates) and the salutatorian, Winston Fant, and valedictorian, Jack Whaley Smith, delivered their speeches flawlessly. It is one thing to know the students, their accolades they have received throughout the years and the accumulation of scholarships that flowed in second semester. It is an entirely different perspective sitting in a packed crowd and hearing them announced one after another followed by even more. It was more than impressive listening to Linda McKinney, counselor, read them all out per student who received them as well as hearing all of the honors. No doubt this class is one that will do well adulting.
Saturday, Delilah Jane Bray celebrated her 2nd birthday with a dinosaur-themed party. Guests were greeted with balloons galore, “dinosaurs” all around and an array of pickup foods for adults and children alike. She had a wonderful time celebrating with all of her little friends and family. Here’s to the best year ever for my sweet girl.
Hank Wheeler of Newnan, Ga., was the weekend guest of Kay and Laura Wheeler. He attended the birthday festivities for his greatgranddaughter, Delilah Jane, Saturday.
