Safe in our city
Every city has to deal with crime, and Holly Springs is no different. Some cities experience more types of crime than smaller cities. But in the last few weeks, our little town has had to deal with drive-by shootings, which nobody wants in their town.
Wednesday is always busy because it is the day the newspaper is delivered to the post offices and newsstands. Last week was no different, except for another drive-by shooting Tuesday sometime before 5 p.m. The past two Sundays, there had been drive-by shootings on S. Chesterman Street and Tuesday evening made the third shooting. Everyone I talked to is concerned about what had been happening.
Staff writer, Sue Watson, called Police Chief Grant Glover and got the story on the drive-by shootings that happened the past two Sundays. Still, before the paper could come back from printing, it happened again, and this time, someone got shot and was sent to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, TN., and another was arrested in the incident.
Many citizens were concerned, and some were scared. But our Mayor and police department were not going to lie down and let a few cause fear in our city
Holly Springs mayor Sharon Gipson, and Glover met to decide how to keep the city safe from serious crimes.
Gipson Friday, along with Glover, announced their concerns and Operation Clean Sweep. Operation Clean Sweep will focus on all individuals who commit property crimes, violent crimes, and drug pushers. Chief Glover said his department will work with the county, adjoining cities, and state and federal agencies to investigate these crimes.
Gipson is asking the community to come together to help fight crime in our city. “If you see something, say something.”
Det. Tranecia Walker asked for the community’s help at the press conference. “We need your help,” Walker said.
The city has Skycams, additional officers and patrol cars, increased patrolling of S. Chesterman and has set bonds to fit the crime. “We need you to let us know ~ If you see some, say something,” Gipson said.
I am thankful for the city taking action against what happened in the last few weeks, and I know we will all work for the safety of our children and families as a city.
I started working at the newspaper the last week of April 2022. The past nine months have been some of the best times. I learned a lot and just fell in love with the people. Being a historic town with many diverse people, Holly Springs is a town like no other. It is a beautiful town with many beautiful people who love art, music, sports, and life. Let’s work together to stomp out crime.
The numbers to call the Holly Springs Police Department are : 662-252-2122 or 662-252-2125, or 662-252- 1992.
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
