Payne presents donation to Rosenwald School
William Sidney Payne Jr., once a student at the Isaac Chapel Rosenwald School, presented a check for $10,000 to support the renovated historic educational facility.
Payne and treasurer Terry Moore announced the donation to the board of supervisors recently.
"It is time we would be coming to let you know I have skin in the game," Payne said. "I'm giving money to encourage others to do the same. I'm a product of that school. I think about shining shoes to finish college. I have a small check." It is Payne's second donation of $10,000.
"A check for $10,000 and this is not the first," Moore said.
The school is an historic landmark in existence for 100 years and built to educate African Americans during racial segregation of schools in the South.
District 4 supervisor George Zinn III asked the board of supervisors to pave a sidewalk and railing to the facility from the parking area.
The sidewalk would be about 150 feet. The board of supervisors unanimously approved the construction of a walkway to the building. The renovated building is now being used for educational purposes and as a museum. The Rosenwald Committee formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit to support the programs at the facility.
