Reflections of Life of Huldia Jane Jackson
Huldia Jane came into this world on July 31, 1943, to the late Leroy and Pearl L. Wilson Jackson in Senatobia, MS. She was the seventh child of 12 to be born to this union. Huldia lived a life of faith, academic excellence, family, and love until she answered the angel’s call to come home on August 5, 2022.
Huldia accepted Christ at the age of 12 and united with Independence Tyro Baptist Church under the pastor ship of Rev. J.R. Richardson. As an adult she united with Middle Baptist Church - Whitehaven in Memphis, TN, under the leadership of Rev. Lester Basken. As a member of Middle Baptist, she served many years as an usher. She was a faithful and dutiful member until her health diminished.
Growing up, her educational advantages were limited by a discriminatory society. Her early educational experience took place in a one-room schoolhouse in Tate County, MS. With no bus to take her to school, Huldia had to walk two miles in the rain, heat, and cold. In spite of these difficulties, she became a successful student and effective educator. At the age of four she was discovered to have an unusual capacity in mathematics. This capacity would characterize much of her academic career, but not all of it. As a high school student, she studied piano and drama. Music became a joy in her life which she would carry into her adult years. After graduating from high school at the age of 15, she attended Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, MS, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. She later completed further studies at the University of Maine and Illinois Institute of Technology. She received a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Mississippi.
In 1969, she married Donald Boyd and to this union one daughter, Canangela, was born.
Huldia worked as a math teacher for 44 years. She started her teaching career in Wynne, AR, and then went on to teach in Holly Springs, MS, in 1965. She retired from the Holly Springs School system after working for over 30 years. However, she didn’t quit after retirement. She also taught school in Fayette County, TN, and Memphis City Schools. She was a dedicated teacher who inspired her students to do the very best in math because she knew it would be an instrument they would use the rest of their lives.
Huldia’s memory and legacy will be cherished by her daughter, Canangela Boyd-Robertson, her two grandsons, Isaac and Isaiah Robertson, and her granddaughter, Amali Robertson, whom she affectionately called Sweet Pea. Her sonin- law, Shawn Robertson, preceded Huldia in death. Her memory will also be treasured by her two sisters, Earlean J. McCormick of Senatobia, MS; and Rosie Marie Smith of Memphis, TN; and her three brothers, J.A. (Effie) Jackson of Senatobia, MS; Robert (Mary Frances) Jackson of Holly Springs, MS; and Wilson (Brenda) Jackson of Kosciusko, MS. Her previously departed and beloved siblings include two sisters, Vernice Brooks and Ruby Means, and two brothers, Jesse Jackson and Leroy Jackson Jr., as well as two stillborn sisters, Robin Mae and Annie Pearl. She will be dearly missed by her 17 nieces and 17 nephews (one niece, Yoichi, and two nephews, Darryl and Chad, who also preceded her in death) and 69 great-nieces and nephews who all lovingly called her Aunt Doll. She also leaves a brother-in-law, James Means, and a host of cousins and friends.
A homegoing celebration for Huldia Jane Jackson Boyd was held at 12 p.m. on August 13, 2022, at Middle Baptist Church in Whitehaven. Burial was in Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park-Midtown. Rodgers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
