Power outages corrected

Some recent electrical outages in the areas of Laws Hill and Highway 4 West, during good weather, were a mystery until George Humphreys with the Holly Springs Utility Department provided causes.

Some of the outages in those areas and others were long, due to the time it took to make repairs, he said.

A storm September 20 caused a phase burndown on Highway 4 West, Humphreys said.

The burn affected a feed that provides power to Laws Hill, Potts Camp, Waterford and Higdon Road, he said.

“When the line fell, 7200 volts hit a fence belonging to Jerimiah LeSueur Jr., at 924 Highway 4 West, electrocuting a cow that touched the fence,” Humphreys said.

The utility department had to turn electricity off to correct that problem and off again September 28 to do permanent repairs, he said.

In another incident, a circuit switch was open on a North Holly Springs substation for an unknown reason. That affected customers in Red Banks and Lamar areas, Humphreys said.

A Highway 310 resident said her power was out Monday, Sept. 20, beginning at just after dark and lasted about 12 to 15 hours. Then Wednesday, Sept. 22, the electricity went out at midnight and was off for five or six hours. Power was out again for about two and a half hours September 28.

Humphreys said the electricity was turned off to put a phase back up on a three-phase line affecting power in the Laws Hill area.

“We had to cut it off to beat the rain,” Humphreys said of the September 28 outage in Laws Hill.
