‘A constant reminder’
The oldest member of The Byhalia Garden Club, 98-year-old Doris Moore, was able to attend the Blue Star Memorial Dedication service on May 15.
Moore’s aunt, Mrs. O.B. Jones, organized the garden club in 1938. Moore’s husband, Lt. Frank Moore, served in the U.S. Army Air Corp., Pacific Theatre, WWII. She has shared so much love, direction and support to so many through the years.
On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon downtown, the Byhalia Garden Club proudly presented the culmination of a year-long project. Many veterans and citizens enjoyed the presentation.
The Byhalia High School Band, under the direction of Andrew Bernard, played an ensemble of American Patriot songs, along with a Veterans Day salute. The presentation of colors was by Olive Branch High School Marine Corps Jr. ROTC.
Rev. Leland Johnson gave the invocation, with Lt. Col.-retired William D. Fitts III leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Soloist Megan Tate sang the National Anthem. Welcoming remarks were given by Mayor Phil Malone and District 3 Supervisor Keith Taylor. State Representative Bill Kinkade introduced guests and officials.
The history of the Blue Star Memorial was given by Nancy Moore, chairman of the Mississippi Blue Star Memorial. Recognition of all veterans was presented by Michael Fronabarger, District 2 commander. He and the Olive Branch High School USMC Jr. ROTC gave tribute to the Missing Man Table.
Doug Royal, with Byhalia Public Works, unveiled the marker. Heather Davis, president of the Byhalia Garden Club, accepted the marker from Moore.
Faye Woods placed the Tribute of Flowers. The benediction was given by Rev. Joe Ranager, interim pastor of Byhalia United Methodist Church.
The Byhalia High School Band played Taps.
“The Byhalia Garden Club was proud and honored to sponsor the Blue Star Memorial Dedication service,” said Jan Sisk, Garden Club member and emcee for the event. “We are so proud to place this monument as a constant reminder of the price our veterans paid for the freedoms we enjoy. Thank you for your service!”
