Absentee voting upsurges

Election Day is less than two weeks away, and absentee votes have climbed over 1,000 in Marshall County.

“We will definitely break a record for absentee voting in Marshall County,” said Monet Autry, in her first term as circuit clerk.

The previous record was in the 1,200 range, she said.

Voter registration is on the upswing, too. As of Friday of last week, there are 24,050 active voters registered in Marshall County, according to Autry.

Absentee ballots that have been mailed to voters have to be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3. Ballots that are postmarked by November 3 will be counted if received in the circuit clerk’s office by November 9.

Person can vote by absentee ballot in the circuit clerk’s office from 8 a.m. To 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The office will also be open two Saturdays for absentee voting Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8 a.m. To 12 noon and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 8 a.m. To 5 p.m. The last day to vote absentee in the circuit clerk’s office is October 31.

The General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and polls will be open from 7 a.m. To 7 p.m.

In addition to choices for President of the United States, United States Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and Supreme Court Justice, there are also a few local, contested races on the ballot.

Running for Election Commissioner, District 1, are Sheri Anne McClatchy and Jamarr “Jack” Walton.

Seeking the Election Commissioner, District 2, position are Sarah Skillman Preciado, Marsha Taylor and Jerry Yarbrough.

Running for Election Commissioner, District 4, are Jacqueline Simon and Naomi Thomas Taylor.

Seeking the County School Board, District 5 position, are Thomas Crouch, Kerry Hale, Mary P. Houston and Wanda Payton-McNeil.

There are also three statewide issues on the ballot. One is the question of whether to legalize medical marijuana. Another is whether to eliminate an electoral college provision in races for governor and other statewide offices. The third is a “yes” or “no” vote on a recommended design for a new Mississippi flag.
