Murder suspect arrested

Agents with the U.S. Marshals Service and Fayette County, Tenn., deputies arrested a suspect Saturday in the murder of Terrance Javon Hampton, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

He said investigators developed a suspect the same day Hampton was shot and killed at a car wash on Highway 72 in Marshall County near the Tennessee line.

The shooting took place close to midnight Sunday, Aug. 12, in the area of Moore’s Grocery while the victim was washing a car at the carwash.

An arrest warrant was issued by Marshall County charging Elias Marcel Winton, 23, of the 2300 block of Jenkins Drive, Rossville, Tenn., with one count of murder, the sheriff said.

After getting the arrest warrant and entering the suspect on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Dickerson contacted the U.S. Marshals Service asking for help in locating and arresting Winton.

“The U.S. Marshals Service and the Fugitive Task Force spent many, many hours in an effort to locate the suspect,” Dickerson said. “Winton was located and arrested late Saturday afternoon at a location near Somerville, Tenn.”

Winton was taken to the Fayette County jail to await extradition back to Mississippi, Dickerson said. The suspect was returned to Marshall County Monday after the suspect voluntarily waived his right to an extradition hearing, Dickerson said.

Winton made an initial appearance in justice court Monday afternoon of this week. Bond was set at $1 million, Dickerson said.

Hampton, 30, the deceased, was from the Memphis Avenue area near Mt. Pleasant in Marshall County.
